I'm thrilled to hear you like how the cover turned out. To varying degrees, my work is usually a combination of photographic elements (in this case, the woman, the alley, and the buildings in the background) combined with textures in Photoshop. The textures I use can be photos of old wood or metal, stained paper, or hand-painted textures. I'll often also use a tablet with Photoshop to paint in certain elements or emphasize others. So, to answer your question, it's a little bit of all of them. The end result is always a digital file, and the process is digital, but it's a combination of photography and natural media.
